It’s been 12 years since & Other Stories landed, bringing with it a particular brand of Scandi cool that has come to dominate the high-street fashion landscape. You will be familiar with the look: the boxy white tee, the tailored trousers, the polished flats and the streamlined tote. It brought quiet luxury to the masses long before the term was coined.
The economic climate hasn’t exactly been easy for the high street over the last decade – we’ve lost track of the number of brands that have either gone into administration or been acquired – yet & Other Stories has managed to prevail, becoming a go-to for everything from wedding guest dresses and work-ready tailoring to cosy knitwear, and beloved by the public, fashion editors and celebrities alike (the Princess of Wales is known to be a fan).
“Scandinavian style is all about those fashion essentials that you can pump up with more stand-out designs,” explains Malin Stone, head of design at & Other Stories. “It’s less about standing out with colours and prints and more about how the proportions sit together, so you can wear something very oversized, but then pair it with something more feminine, like a heel. Even though the final look may appear low-key, it’s not at all – every single detail is extremely well thought through.”
For autumn, & Other Stories has leant into an earthy colour palette of chocolate-brown, beige and ochre, materialising in wide-legged jeans, cropped bombers, trench coats and supple suede accessories. Charcoal grey, meanwhile, has overtaken black as the base-shade du jour, with woollen winter coats and cashmere knits alike rendered in the steely hue – it is also, conveniently, a perfect accompaniment for the aforementioned autumn leaf shades. All in all, everything you need for the ultimate cold-weather capsule wardrobe.
