FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Exit interviews obtained by Valley News Live are shining an overwhelmingly positive light on leadership in the Fargo Police Department.
Of the 38 interviews we reviewed, 24 checked off 10s across the board or mostly 10s on their exit survey, the highest score possible. Categories on those surveys were: professional environment, company benefits, career opportunities, supervision received, working conditions, pay for work required, type of work performed, and job met expectations.
One of the employees who gave a score of 10 across the board was now-Moorhead Police Captain Bill Ahlfeldt, who left Fargo PD in August. He cited the “incredible” opportunity in Moorhead as his only reason for leaving.
10 more employees gave mostly-favorable scores but did not provide any additional feedback.
Of the negative feedback listed in the exit interviews, the majority focused on the workload for officers and detectives, saying it was too high for their staffing level. Others cited a lack of growth opportunities, and others cited low pay for the work performed.
Three of those interviews cited a complaint with the work environment. One officer who resigned in May of 2022 cited staffing issues for that negative environment.
None of the exit interviews mentioned any issue with the work environment after May of 2023.
Leadership at the Fargo Police Department came under scrutiny from city officials and the media following their response to a fatal downtown shooting this summer.
