Turkey’s National Security Council, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Tuesday reaffirmed that the Cyprus issue is a “national matter” and expressed support for a two-state solution on the island.
The council emphasized that such a solution should recognize the “sovereign equality and equal international status” of Turkish Cypriots.
The statement also warned that Ankara will maintain a “resolute stance” against any measures that could undermine the island’s “peaceful environment.”
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded following a coup by Athens junta-backed supporters of uniting the island with Greece. The resulting Turkish-occupied north of the island declared independence in 1983, a move recognized only by Turkey.
