Asked to lose weight for her role, Keaton went on a peculiar diet. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those weird ones \u2013\u00a0placenta of unborn lamb. A shot every day,\u201d she told The New York Times<\/em><\/a> in 1972. \u201cThe Hair<\/em> people paid for half of it and I paid the other half \u2013\u00a0$35 a week\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and I lost a lot of weight and never gained it back.\u201d She refused to take her clothes off for the nude scene. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t for any sort of philosophical reason. It was just that I was too scared.\u201d<\/p>\n Her stage stint in Play It Again, Sam<\/em> came in 1969, followed by a movie role in Lovers and Other Strangers<\/em> (1970). A small part but enough to enrapture, with Al Ruddy, producer of The Godfather<\/em> casting her as Kay Adams. On the set of The Godfather Part II<\/em> (1974), Keaton was inspired for her Annie Hall<\/em> aesthetic. \u201cI stole what I wanted to wear from the cool-looking women on the streets of Soho. Annie\u2019s khaki pants, vest and tie came from them,\u201d she wrote in her memoir. \u201cI stole the hat from Aurore Cl\u00e9ment, Dean Tavoularis\u2019s future wife, who showed up on the set of The Godfather Part II<\/em>\u00a0one day wearing a man\u2019s slouchy bolero pulled down low over her forehead. And a little old car. That\u2019s my dream.\u201d<\/p>\n Keaton adopted her daughter Dexter in 1996 and son Duke in 2001, and lived in a Spanish colonial revival in Beverly Hills with two rescue dogs, elaborate archways, courtyards and drama. She kept 20 brimmed hats<\/a>, two top hats, and 34 caps and berets displayed neatly in her bedroom wardrobe.<\/p>\n
