But 251 years, eight unbroken generations and many Johanns, Johanneses, Carls and Karls later, the company that emerged from that first family business has become one of the most rampagingly successful footwear brands on the planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Birkenstock now sells tens of millions of pairs of shoes every year (they won\u2019t say how many), giving the company a valuation of $7.5bn (\u00a35.6bn) when it floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2023. They rose in the boho chic years, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/08\/04\/899060826\/nearly-250-year-old-shoe-company-sees-a-spike-in-popularity-amid-the-pandemic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">soared<\/a> during Covid and were even given <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/entertainment\/tv-and-film\/barbie-movie-caused-spike-searches-birkenstock-sandals#:~:text=In%20the%20movie%2C%20Weird%20Barbie,seen%20happily%20wearing%20a%20pair.\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">an extra bounce<\/a> by the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/tB1_h5RQ8l8\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Barbie movie<\/a>. The current big seller, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birkenstock.com\/gb\/models\/boston\/?cpeu=boston-eva&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=evergreen-all_GB&amp;utm_term=dsa&amp;utm_content=&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=716127555&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADRmE59jHl3tZKXqVmnX93NX-_B15&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw0NPGBhCDARIsAGAzpp0PekRV89FGZExLk6QEkCYUZV-J_DBJT30Pb9ovCteauNkMLUVU4hoaApTeEALw_wcB\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Boston clog<\/a>, was hailed by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/article\/clog-trend-how-to-wear\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">British Vogue<\/a> in April as the \u201cshoe that has the fashion crowd in a chokehold\u201d \u2013 yet in 2026 the Boston will mark 50 years, entirely unchanged, since it was first introduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">How did a brand described even by some of its fans as the world\u2019s ugliest shoe become one of the world\u2019s most popular? Not by leaning into trends. \u201cFashion has never been our thing \u2013 neither then nor now,\u201d the company\u2019s CEO, Oliver Reichert, said recently, a bold choice of words from a man leading a global style brand. It was Konrad Birkenstock, great-grandson of Johann Adam, who first introduced an orthopaedic shoe in 1897, making waves by his bold suggestion that right and left feet should be shaped differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Carl, his son, insisted that shoe retailers complete a training course before they were even allowed to stock the product; when Carl\u2019s son Karl (told you \u2026) launched the Original Birkenstock Footbed Sandal at D\u00fcsseldorf shoe fair in 1963, he got a wave of ridicule and not a single order. Their \u2018anti-fashion\u2019 aesthetic taps into a deeper cultural moment where authenticity and utility are often prized over overt trendiness. In a world that cycles rapidly through fast fashion, Birkenstocks offer a stable, grounded alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anastasiakgabriel.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Dr Anastasia K\u0101rkli\u0146a Gabriel<\/a>, a cultural critic and author of Cultural Intelligence for Marketers, points to the brand\u2019s popularity in the 1970s US counterculture as a turning point. \u201cBirkenstock was a rebellion against mainstream American footwear. Workers scan sheets of coloured leather by eye before carefully placing cutters where the hide has no defects. Having set the model for the lazy summer sandal, the brand is dogged by fake and copycat products, and failed earlier this year in a legal attempt to copyright its products as works of art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Don\u2019t bet on that German court case holding Birkenstock back. The company now has a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birkenstock.com\/gb\/1774\/about\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">luxury line<\/a>, called 1774, and a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birkenstock-group.com\/de\/en\/detail-press\/birkenstock-proves-its-commitment-to-the-category-of-professional-shoes\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">professional line<\/a> aimed at workers, and continues with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birkenstock-group.com\/de\/en\/newsroom\/birkenstock-and-manolo-blahnik-launch-new-styles-of-their-remarkable-sell-out-collaboration\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">high-end<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birkenstock.com\/gb\/1774\/all-contributors\/rick-owens\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">designer<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lofficielbaltic.com\/en\/lhommes\/the-dior-x-birkenstock\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">collaborations<\/a> and non-sandal launches, such as this month\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/becauselondon.com\/articles\/fashion\/2025-summer\/walk-with-us\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Utti Lace<\/a> shoe. It is also expanding into <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birkenstock-group.com\/de\/en\/detail-press\/birkenstock-opens-its-first-store-in-china\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">China<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fashionunited.uk\/news\/retail\/a-foot-in-the-door-birkenstock-opens-three-more-stores-in-mumbai\/2025080783254\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">India<\/a>, has introduced a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birkenstock.com\/gb\/care-essentials\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">skincare line<\/a>, and on Thursday <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessoffashion.com\/news\/retail\/birkenstock-lifts-sales-outlook-buys-factory-to-make-more-clogs\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">revealed<\/a> plans to buy another German factory to boost production.
